Hello there!
You always wanted to extract your favorite AudioCD tracks to disk? Now you can!
What is CDToAIFF?
It is a software that can extract audiotracks from an AppleCD 300 or 600 Drive to an AIFF File in different formats.
What does it require?
At least System 7, 68020, AppleCD 300 or 600 (or any CDDrive that supports audioextraction and that has use an apple driver) and some diskspace.
What is new in v1.2?
CDToAIFF has now a preffile, where you can save your prefered sound format (sample rate, size and channels) and your default sound folder (new with a GetFolder dialog). The problem with FWB CD-ROM Toolkit should be fixed now. If you want to, you can preview your sound and estimate the start of the song...
New in v1.2c is the prehear possibility in the option dialog of MultiRec. But v1.2c is mostly a bug fix version (I was really mad about my prg as I had to make a sampler CD in a very short time - and the prg crashed all the time... Now it is quite stable, even on a PowerMac).
Any errors?
Do you know a program without errors? Yes, it has many errors, but as always I have hidden them as good as possible and you have to find them and tell me where they are (I love to play hide-and-seek). I can test the prg on a PM7500 with System 7.5.2 and an internal CD600 and on a PowerBook 165c with an external CD300. If you find any problems with other system-configuration, please tell me!
Like the last times, I would not like to be responsible for any kind of damage that occure in result of using CDToAIFF, but if the app makes a bank computer doing all the money on your account, please send me a mail (or part of your account...) :-)
What do you want for CDToAIFF?
CDToAIFF is a Shareware programm. If you use it, please send to me, what you think it is worth. I think with every version it will be worthier, what do you think about $10? (If you send money: please do it inside of some papers, so it isn't visible...) But if you think it's not worth anything although you use it, please send me at least a postcard (if you have: a postcard with a picture that has something to do with dancing).
And may I ask you for a favour? I have a friend in the USA called Lance. He is a really great dance teacher and surely knows every old dance from the twenties on. What is the reason, why you made CDToAIFF?
(short version)
I think beside SimpleText and perhaps some commercial software, CDToAIFF is the first and only software that can record an audiotrack to an AIFF File. I did need a software that can do this, nothing was around, so I had to make this at my own.. :-)
(long version)
Some times ago I got my first CD-ROM Drive. Of course I was impressed by the possibility of reading so much data to my PowerBook. Soon I tried to insert an AudioCD, but - no sound!
I had to put on some headphones to hear the sound - triste, because on my HiFi the sound was better; I only wanted to hear the CDs through my Computer!
Like many others I asked on the Internet whether there are some little apps that could help my need. No answer and I was to lazy to make such an utility by myself, but sometimes I found out, that you can record sound from the Apple CD Drive with the help of SimpleText!
Open SimpleText, choose the Open-Command in the Filemenu and go to the Audio-CD. If you select a Track, the Open button will change to Convert.
That means I could record a CD-Track in QuickTime-Movie.
After a while I got a CD-Recorder. I wanted to record some AudioCD, so I needed the AudioFiles in 44kHz 16Bit Stereo format. Because I wanted to make some CD-Compilation for my dance practice I had to record some AudioTracks from different CDs to Disk. Recording with SimpleText and afterwards converting to AIFF was to much time consuming, so I made this little programm: CDToAIFF.
Ok, but how can I record an Audiotrack from CD?
There are two possibilities: A nice, fast and ease one and the older one. Choose by yourself, but with one of the next versions, I think the older one will be past.
If you select MultiTrack from the Filemenu, you have choosen the newer methode. You will see a dialog, with two lists. In the right one, you will see different Tracks - if you have an AudioCD in the Drive. The left list will be filled if you either doubleclick a track oder choose add, when you have selected a track.
If you doubleclick in the left list, you can set some option for this recording. You can say where to start (or estimate it), how long the recording should be and what about the fadeIn and fadeOut. In addition you can enter a name for the track that will added to the defaultname. If you would like to preview the soundtrack, then you should use the start, end or ｱ 4 sec buttons. This way you can graphically decide where to start and where to end the extraction.
If you want to, you can eject the CD by clicking on Eject. It is no problem to add tracks from different CDs, but count which number is which CD. If you are not sure, wheter you want to add a song, just click on Play some and you will hear the Audiotrack through the computerspeaker (yeah, really, you will not hear anything in the headphone jack).
Finally you can choose in which folder the files should be saved. Select Set Destination for this. Normaly you make this by default in the file preferences menu, where you can change the sample rate, size and the no. of channels as well. By the way, you will always see, how much space you will have left on the harddisk.
If you click on record, the mac will ask you eventually to insert the right CD. During the process of recording you will see a progressbar, that tries to estimate how long it will still take.
Do you have some other hints?
- Try it out!
- Choose New, if you want to make a new AIFF File (you donﾔt need to, if you are using Multi Recording) or Open, if you want to open an existing one (you donﾔt need to do this either, if you are using Multi Recording).
- If you have an open AIFF File, you can add a recording to it by choosing Record in the CD Menu. You can also add a 1-minute pause if you need to...
- You can have only one open File at a time.
- It is not possible to open an audiotrack from the filemenu...
- use the File Preferences to set default sample rate, size, num channels and default sound folder.
- If you want to have a short start and end: use the preview/prehear possibility and cut the song at the start and end...
- Write to me if you have whishes, questions or too much time...
What will be in the next versions?
Sorry, I don't know yet, but I have the following ideas (remember: only ideas):
- Multi Recording will be a document of CDToAIFF, so you can save your collections.
- You can overload an entry in the MultiRecord list, that means, you can add different CDTracks, Files, Effektes, Pauses to the same file in the same step - and you can save it.
- It will show the CD-Names, if you have inserted them.
- Speedcontrol of the recording
- Support of other formats than plain AIFF (e.g. compressed AIFF, SDII, Sys7, ...)
(has someone the specs for the SDII format?)
- Different open AIFF Files.
Tell me, what idea you think is the most important one, so I know where to start next.

Some release-history:
08/09/95: v1.0a - first release (I'm looking for feedbackﾉ)
08/16/95: v1.1a - not an official release; multiple tracks recording feature added; it works now with the AppleCD 600 and you can enjoy the normal boring shareware-remainder-dialog.
08/21/95: v1.1b - there must be many different CD600 drives... - should work now with every apple drive CD300 and higher. Multiple Tracks: options without calculation frames to min,sec,frm - easier for you now. Perhaps some other minor improvments I don't remember now.. :-)
11/13/95: v1.1c - not an official release; bug in connection with fwb CD-ROM Toolkit fixed.
11/25/95: v1.2a - file preferences added. That means, you can now choose the sample rate, size, no of channels and the soundfolder (new with a getFolder dialog) by default. In the option dialog of the Multitrack Recording dlg, you can estimate the start of the song and you can preview the whole track.
12/11/95: v1.2b - not an official release; bug fixed that makes a PowerMac crash after playing a file; bug fixed for the preview option: now the right song will be shown, not so many crashes anymore
12/17/95: v1.2c - bug fixed: now the end of the last track on a CD will be shown correctly in the OptionDlg; You can now download at least 99 tracks: so it is possible to read a full standard red book CD in principle (I never saw a CD with more than 33 tracks...).
